Rosemary at the maidens’ windows on May morning

Until about forty years before Trevelyan wrote, young Welshmen decked a large bunch of rosemary with white ribbons on May Day morning and set it at the bedroom window of the girl they admired. Someone who wanted to insult an enemy tied a horse’s head to the door latch instead, and effigies of anyone who had made themselves notorious were carried round the villages and pelted, as late as the 1860s.
