Hutchinson’s History of Northumberland describes a syllabub made for the May feast from milk warm from the cow, sweet cakes and wine. A wedding ring was dropped into the bowl, and the company fished for it in turn with a ladle. Whoever brought up the ring was expected to be the first of them to marry.
