Beltane fair at Peebles

Robert Kier of Falkirk wrote that in Scotland the first day of May was once called Beltane, a season of boisterous mirth, and that the town of Peebles still held a fair called the Beltane fair. The old poem Peblis to the Play, which he gave to King James I, tells of everyone making ready for the play at Peebles at Beltane. The crowd chose a king and queen of May and dressed them up to preside over the games and clerks’ plays of the season. Peebles still keeps its Beltane festival.

There is still a fair at the town of Peebles, which goes by the name of the Beltane fair.
