Camden, writing of the manners of the Irish, said they counted any woman who came to fetch fire on May Day a witch. They would give fire that day only to the sick, and even then with a curse, believing that whoever took it would steal all their butter the following summer. On May Day they also killed any hares they found among their cattle, taking them for old women with designs on the butter, and they believed butter stolen by such means could be recovered by burning some of the thatch that hung over the door.
