Robert Kier’s letter from Falkirk said that in Scotland no one would marry in May. On the first morning of the month girls rose early to gather May dew and throw it over their shoulders, hoping for a good husband. Catching a snail by the horns and throwing it over the shoulder was lucky, and a snail set on a slate was thought to trace the initials of the future husband.
