Why the whitethorn is called May

1 May · England

Lore and belief

The whitethorn took the name May because, before the change of the calendar, it flowered about the feast of St Philip and St James on the first day of May. Forster pointed out that since the change of style even the blackthorn was hardly out by May Day, so the name no longer fitted the date.

The Whitethorn used, in the Old Style, to flower about St. Philip and St. James, and thence was called May, after the initial Day of the fifth Month
