In Scotland the Robin Hood games were played with great spirit, above all at Edinburgh, together with the burlesque of the Abbot of Unreason and a Queen of May. As May drew near the townspeople chose respectable citizens to play Robin Hood, Little John and the Abbot, and anyone who would not dress up and dance had to pay a fine. On a Sunday or holiday the town marched out to a field where Robin and Little John robbed bishops and shot at the butts, the Abbot capered, and Maid Marian and the morris dancers joined in. Chambers says the whole thing was stopped at the Reformation by Act of Parliament.
