On May Day 1499 the parish of St Laurence in Reading paid for fodder for the horses of the Kings of Cologne, the three Wise Men of its King play. Brand, quoting the churchwardens’ accounts in Coates’s History of Reading, explains after Coates that the King play or King game showed the Magi’s offering, the Magi being held to be kings buried at Cologne. The minstrels were paid a shilling the same day.
