Every May Day Elizabeth Montagu, the bluestocking hostess, gave a dinner for the chimney sweeps of London at her house in Portman Square. They had roast beef and plum pudding and a shilling each, and danced after the meal. Hone, writing in 1825 after her death, regretted that the climbing boys had no one left to cheer them once a year, and set beside it the yearly dinner James Montgomery and his friends gave the climbing boys of Sheffield.
