Brand was more than once woken early on May morning in Newcastle by a woman singing in the streets with several garlands in her hands, which he believed she sold to anyone who would buy. Her song called on the maidens to get up for shame, since she had walked four long miles from home gathering garlands, and to take in their May. Brand printed the song while admitting it was homely and low, since his subject, he said, was not the sublime.
