No longer kept

On May Day the children of Baldock were out with the sun, carrying hooped garlands of flowers and ribbons on staves from door to door, led by a flag made of a silk handkerchief hung from an ash bough. The girls curtsied and asked passers-by to look at the garland, and the money collected paid for the day’s treats. The day always ended with the children playing Thread my needle, or Needle-tick, up and down and all round the town until nightfall. Hone’s correspondent remembered it from his childhood and believed it had died out by 1831.
