On May morning the poor women of Baldock dressed up straw and rag effigies of a lord and lady in their husbands’ and their own Sunday clothes and sat them side by side outside the cottage door. The pair wore May flowers on their bosoms and guarded a hat for the onlookers’ money, with a mug of ale, a pipe, spectacles and a newspaper laid on a table before them. Hone’s correspondent recalled five to ten such couples on show in one back street, and named Betty Thorn as the best maker of them.
