Dray horses in ribbons on May Day

On May Day the Midland Railway’s Sheffield dray horses paraded at the Wicker goods station with ribbons in their manes and tails and polished brass, and prizes went to the best-groomed. Hazlitt quoted the Sheffield Daily Telegraph of 2 May 1889. He added that cart, waggon and brewers’ horses were still dressed with ribbons and rosettes on May Day in 1903.
