Aubrey noted that the boys of Oxford blew cows’ horns and hollow canes all through the night before May Day. On the day itself the young maids of every parish carried round garlands of flowers, which were afterwards hung up in the churches. Hearne, writing of the old habit of drinking from horns, remarked that horn-blowing still went on at Oxford at this season to remind people of the pleasant time of year.
