Martin Martin found that the people of Barvas in Lewis sent a man across the Barvas river very early every first of May. It had to be a man, because if a woman crossed the river first that day the salmon would not come into it all year. The villagers said they had learned this from a foreign sailor wrecked on their coast long before, and held that experience had proved it true.
