Sycamore boughs at the Cornish door

1 May

No longer kept

Borlase, the historian of Cornwall, wrote that the Cornish still decked their doors and porches on the first of May with green boughs of sycamore and hawthorn. They also planted trees, or rather the stumps of trees, before their houses. Borlase saw it simply as a greeting to the spring, each house showing its joy at the return of green things.
