On May morning little girls in the parish of Debden went from house to house with garlands of different sizes, the large ones with a doll dressed in white in the middle, singing a carol that began with rambling all the night. Chambers pieced the words together from several parties of children, each with its own version, and thought the doll had once stood for the Virgin Mary. He printed beside it the longer Mayers’ song of Hitchin, and noted that at Thaxted, near by, the girls waved branches before the doors but had forgotten the song.
