C. Tomlinson wrote to Hone in April 1827 that at Randwick near Stroud it had been the custom time out of mind on May Day to deck three large Gloucester cheeses with the gayest spring flowers and carry them on litters dressed with flowers and green boughs through the village. A shouting crowd and a little band went with them to the churchyard, where the cheeses were stripped of their flowers and rolled three times round the church. They were then carried back and cut up in the middle of the village and shared out among the people. Cheese rolling is still part of the Randwick Wap in May.
