From Crofton Croker’s Fairy Legends of the South of Ireland, Hone gives the belief that at first light on May morning the princely O’Donoghue rides his white horse over the waters of Killarney. The same source describes May Eve as a time of danger, when the fairies could do mischief and cows were driven over burning straw to keep the milk from being stolen. On May Day itself village mummers went out with a holly bush hung with new hurling balls.
