A correspondent told Hone that every May Day a girl from Raine’s charity school at St George in the East, near London, was chosen to be married. She was given a hundred pounds from the funds of the school as her marriage portion, and this was said to follow ancient custom. Hone printed the note beside the account of the Maidens’ Portion at Sutton Coldfield, another May Day gift to brides.
