No longer kept

Once the May-pole was set up, the company drank to the garlands of flowers hung round it and to the girls whose hands had made them. Herrick’s short song The May-pole gives the toast, wishing the garland-makers lords or earls for husbands and many children.

The May-pole is up, / Now give me the cup; / I'le drink to the Garlands a-round it: / But first unto those / Whose hands did compose / The glory of flowers that crown'd it.
