The Hitchin Mayers

1 May · Hitchin, Hertfordshire

No longer kept

A letter from Hitchin in 1823 told Hone how, soon after three on May morning, townspeople and labourers paraded the streets singing the Mayers’ Song and fixed large branches of may to the doors of nearly every respectable house. A maidservant who had offended any of the Mayers during the year found elder and nettles on her door instead, a public disgrace. Through the day companies of Mayers danced about the town with a Lord and Lady and a blacked-up pair called Mad Moll and her husband, who swept road dust over the crowd with a broom.

If, in the course of the year, a servant has given offence to any of the Mayers, then, instead of a branch of May, a branch of elder, with a bunch of nettles, is affixed to her door
