Hone remembered Jack-o’-the-Greens, figures dressed out in ribbons and flowers from the village May games, coming into the London suburbs to dance. The last he saw were at the Paddington May-dance by the Yorkshire Stingo, about twenty years before he wrote, and from there they went on to Bayswater and Kentish Town. Each Jack carried a long stick wreathed with flowers, which he whisked about in the dance. The last maypole he knew near London stood near Kennington Green until about 1795 and was much used by the milkmaids.
