Reginald Scot, in his Discovery of Witchcraft, recorded that people hung in their entries, among other things, hawthorn gathered on May Day to keep witches away. Aubrey noted the same practice in Germany, where the common people fetched a thorn on the night before May Day and stuck it on the house door so that the witches gathering on the Blocksberg could do them no harm. Scot lists the hawthorn among many other things hung up for the same purpose, in a book written to expose such beliefs.
