On the first of May the herdsmen of several farms in Moray gathered dry wood, lit it and danced three times sunwise round the pile. The minister of Elgin, answering Pennant’s queries, counted it among the pagan customs the people still kept, along with going sunwise round the church at weddings and baptisms.
