It was believed that anyone in a clean life who asked God for a boon on Christmas Day would be granted it, so far as it was right and good for him. Sandys found the belief in Wynkyn de Worde’s Golden Legend and set it beside other Christmas omens: that the weather of the twelve days foretold the twelve months, which Dives and Pauper condemned, and that Christmas Day falling on a Sunday was fortunate.
