At Christmas people gave themselves up to cards, dice, tables, masking, mumming and bowling, as if the season gave them a special licence to do as they liked. Their answer to any rebuke was to ask whether it was not Christmas, and whether they must not be merry. Stubbes, attacking it, held that Christmas should be kept by meditating on the birth of Christ, and complained that more mischief, dicing, banqueting and feasting went on then than in all the rest of the year.
