The wassail bowl after fox-i’-th’-hole

25 December · England

No longer kept

At Christmas the wassail bowl was tossed off after a round of the game fox-i’-th’-hole, and blind-man’s-buff was played by the fire. Herrick lists these among the Christmas sports in A New-yeares gift sent to Sir Simeon Steward, a verse letter sent from the country in place of a present.

Of Christmas sports, the Wassell-boule, / That tost up, after Fox-i'th'hole: / Of Blind-man-buffe
