At the court of Charles I a Christmas carol was sung before the King in the Presence Chamber at Whitehall, opening with a flourish of music before the song. Herrick wrote the words of A Christmas Caroll, sung to the King in the Presence at White-Hall, set to music by Henry Lawes, which ends by offering the Christ child a wreath of holly and ivy as Lord of the season’s revelling. It is printed in His Noble Numbers.
