At Christmas parties in Cumberland and Westmorland a bowl of hot rum punch went round as the wassail or loving cup before the guests left. The master and dame drank first to the health of each guest, then everyone in turn took the bowl in both hands and drank to the whole company. Denham noted that by the time it had gone round, everyone was ready to dance.

it is then handed round to each, who, also, taking the bowl in both hands, drinks to the health and happiness of the whole assembly.
