By 1740 Poor Robin was complaining that the old Christmas could only be found in the red letters of the almanacs. In many gentlemen’s houses the kitchen had shrunk to a chafing-dish and the cellar to a few bottles, so that no scraps were left for dogs and beggars at the gate. He said the only one feasting was my lady’s French lapdog, which ate from her dish at the head of the table.
