Near Raleigh in Nottinghamshire, a Hone correspondent wrote, there was a valley said to have been made by an earthquake centuries before, which swallowed a whole village and its church. It had been the custom for people to gather in the valley on Christmas morning to listen to the bells of the buried church ringing beneath them. They claimed the bells could be heard by putting an ear to the ground. Old people were still telling children to go to the valley on Christmas morning and hear the bells ring.
