When St John’s College, Oxford, kept its celebrated Christmas Prince in 1607, the boar’s head was carried into hall by the tallest and lustiest of the prince’s guard. Before him went a huntsman with a boar spear, another in green with a bloody falchion drawn, and two pages in taffeta each carrying a mess of mustard. The bearer sang a carol as he entered, the whole company repeating the last three lines of each verse, and the prince kept his reign until Shrove Tuesday.
