In Forfarshire and much of the Highlands the great merry-making of the year was held at Christmas, when most of Lowland Scotland kept it at New Year instead. The Reformed Kirk had put down Christmas across the Lowlands, and the year’s feasting there moved to Hogmanay and New Year’s Day. Chambers notes the county of Forfar as one of the few districts that still kept Yule as its chief holiday.
