Lore and belief

A northern saying called anyone who married at Yule a fool, because the baby would come just when the corn needed cutting. Denham paired it with the saying that whoever married between the sickle and the scythe would never thrive. He added that farm labourers still took the first saying seriously.

He's a fule that marries at Yule, For when the bairn's to bear The corn's to shear.
