The Middle Temple Lord of Misrule’s court

At the Middle Temple Christmas of 1632 the Lord of Misrule kept a full mock court, with his own Lord Keeper, Lord Treasurer, eight white staves, a band of pensioners with their captain, and two chaplains. Real nobles and officials played along: Lord Holland, as his Justice in Eyre, sent him venison, and the Lord Mayor and Sheriffs of London supplied his wine. Evelyn still went to see the Middle Temple revels in January 1668, calling them an old but riotous custom.

His venison was supplied by Lord Holland, his Justice in Eyre, and the Lord Mayor and Sheriffs of London furnished his wine.
