The young men’s Christmas begging for the poor at Grange

In the Christmas holidays the young men of Grange went round the parish in parties, begging on behalf of its neediest people. Every year they gathered several bolls of meal and some pounds in money, which they handed to the kirk session to be kept for those they had collected for. The minister of Grange thought the practice good for the morals of old and young alike, teaching the young benevolence and charity.
