Ellis recorded a set of Christmas beliefs alongside the vessel-cup carol. It was unlucky to cut the Christmas cheese or Yule cake before the day, to light the Yule log or candle early, to stir the fire or snuff the candle during supper, or to sit an odd number at table. A fragment of the log kept under a bed guarded the house from fire. On Christmas morning nobody but boys might go out of doors until a male had crossed the threshold, and for a woman to enter first, then or on New Year’s morning, was the height of ill luck.

No person except boys must presume to go out of doors on the morning of this day, till the threshold has been consecrated by the footsteps of a male.
