No longer kept

At Christmas-time in some Cambridge colleges a scholar who missed chapel was made to ride a colt-staff or pole as his punishment, which was called stanging. Grose gave it under the northern word stang, a long wooden pole, and noted that in Yorkshire a man who beat his wife, or a wife who beat her husband, was likewise made to ride the stang.
