On Christmas morning children in Yorkshire went gooding from house to house, carrying a small Christmas tree as the badge of their errand. Chambers printed the rhyme they sang, lamenting that Christmas goes too soon and asking for a gift. The children took care to say that they were no beggars but neighbours’ children known to the household. Chambers illustrated the scene with an engraving of the little carollers with their tree.
