Davies Gilbert, who published the old carols of the West of England with their tunes, said that on Christmas Day they were sung in place of the psalms in all the churches, above all at the afternoon service, with the whole congregation joining in. At the end the parish clerk called out his wishes for a merry Christmas and a happy new year. Chambers heard the village choir of a Devonshire parish sing carols by lantern light outside a country house on Christmas Eve. The Devon singers pooled what they were given and spent it on a merry evening together on Twelfth Day.
