No longer kept

In Scotland there was an old superstition against spinning on Christmas, or Yule Day. The Calvinist clergy set out to break it, and Jamieson quoted a Catholic writer, John Hamilton, who complained that the ministers made their wives and servants spin in open sight of the people on Yule Day, and that their followers made their tenants yoke their ploughs. He claimed the judgement followed, for the oxen ran mad, broke their necks and lamed some ploughmen. Christmas then faded in the Lowlands in favour of New Year, though the Highlands and Forfarshire kept Christmas as their great holiday.
