No longer kept

In former times the charity of Christmas and New Year was extended to the animals. Burns’s old farmer gives his mare an extra feed of corn on New Year’s morning. Chambers’s own great-grandfather, a small landowner in the Carse of Falkirk and an Episcopalian, carried a special supply of fodder himself to every animal in his stable and byre on Christmas morning. He used to say it was the one morning of the year when man and beast alike ought to rejoice.
