The minister of Kirkden in Angus reported in 1792 that Christmas was kept as a great festival in his parish. On the day the servant was free of his master and went visiting, and the poorest had beef or mutton and a dinner with friends. Many amused themselves by shooting for prizes, called there wad-shooting, and little business was done all Christmas week.
